How to plan a Bonaire trip

Bonaire is easy to navigate and compact enough to explore fully in a week. The island is roughly 60km long and 10km wide at its widest point. Most visitors base themselves in or near Kralendijk, the main town, and explore by rental car or 4WD. Day trips to Washington Slagbaai National Park and Klein Bonaire (by boat) are the main longer excursions — everything else is accessible in an hour or less.

The Visit Bonaire app maps everything — every dive site, restaurant, tour stop, and viewpoint — and works fully offline. Download it before you travel and use it as your on-island companion from day one. You won't need to check signal or roaming status at any point during your trip.

3-day Bonaire itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive, settle, first dive

Arrive at Flamingo Airport (BON). Pick up your rental car — book in advance, especially in peak season. Check into your accommodation, most dive-focused resorts are directly on the water. Afternoon: gear up and do your first shore dive at the Bonaire town pier or a nearby entry point like Donkey Beach. Evening: dinner on the Kaya Grandi harbour front — pick a spot with a harbour view and watch Klein Bonaire turn gold at sunset.

Day 2 — Klein Bonaire & marine park

Morning: boat trip to Klein Bonaire for two dives. No Dive Name and Angel City are excellent choices — both are on the marine reserve side of the island with exceptional coral. Purchase your marine park nature tag at your dive shop if you haven't already. Afternoon: explore Kralendijk, visit the local market, and pick up essentials. Sunset: drive south to the salt flats to photograph the flamingos and pink salt pans in the golden hour light.

Day 3 — North drive & final dives

Morning: drive the coastal road north. Stop at 1000 Steps for a dive or snorkel session — the viewpoint at the top is worth the stop alone. Continue up to the Washington Slagbaai National Park entrance if time allows; even a look at the entrance area gives a sense of the scale of the terrain. Afternoon: final dive at a site closer to town — Bari Reef in front of the Divi Flamingo Resort is a reliable favourite. Pack. Dinner at a local favourite. Bonaire stays with you.

5-day Bonaire itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive & orient

Arrive, pick up your rental, check in. Take an easy orientation dive in the afternoon — the house reef at most dive resorts is a good starting point. Dinner at a harbour restaurant. Early night; you have dives ahead.

Day 2 — Marine park deep dive

Two dives in the morning — try Salt Pier for your first proper dive on the island. The pier pillars are extraordinary. Afternoon: drive south and visit the slave huts and salt flats. The scale of the salt operation and the small huts sitting next to it make for a powerful contrast. Flamingo viewing on the way back as the light drops.

Day 3 — Klein Bonaire

Full day boat trip to Klein Bonaire. Two or three dives on the marine reserve, snorkeling in between, lunch on the boat. For most divers, this is the standout day of a Bonaire trip. The coral density and fish life on Klein Bonaire are exceptional even by Bonaire's high standards.

Day 4 — Washington Slagbaai National Park

Full day self-drive through Washington Slagbaai. Pack lunch and at least 2 litres of water per person — facilities inside the park are minimal. Visit Boka Slagbaai for a swim, Goto Meer for flamingos, and the northern viewpoints for the best panoramas on the island. The Visit Bonaire app maps every stop on the route so you don't miss anything. Expect to spend 5–7 hours in the park.

Day 5 — Final dives & departure

Morning dives at a favourite site. Relax, pack, lunch in town at a harbour café. Flamingo Airport (BON) is small — arriving 90 minutes early is plenty. Depart.

7-day Bonaire itinerary

A week on Bonaire is the ideal first trip. It gives you time for diving, touring, eating well, and discovering the rhythm of the island without rushing.

Days 1–2 — Settle in and dive

First two days to orient, do shore dives, and find your rhythm. Evenings on the harbour — try a different restaurant each night. No rush. The island rewards patience.

Day 3 — Klein Bonaire

Full day at Klein Bonaire. The marine reserve is worth every penny of the boat fee. Try at least two sites — the sites on the south side of the island (No Dive Name, Angel City) have exceptional fish density. Bring underwater photography equipment if you have it.

Day 4 — South island

Drive south. Slave huts, salt flats, flamingo colony at the salt pans. Afternoon: Lac Bay for windsurfing, kiteboarding, or snorkeling in the shallow seagrass beds. Beach bar at Sorobon for sunset — cold drink, warm breeze, and a view that justifies the whole trip.

Day 5 — Washington Slagbaai

Full day national park. 4WD essential — the dirt roads inside the park are rough in places. Pack lunch, water, and sunscreen. The Visit Bonaire app maps the entire route offline, including all named viewpoints and swimming spots. Goto Meer for flamingos, Boka Slagbaai for the best cove swim on the island.

Day 6 — Free day

Sleep late. Try a restaurant you missed — perhaps the fine dining option you've been saving. Afternoon dive at your favourite site from the week. Maybe Karpata, maybe the Salt Pier again, maybe somewhere you found on the app that you hadn't heard of before. Evening: sit on the pier in Kralendijk and watch the sun go down. This is what Bonaire is for.

Day 7 — Last morning, depart

One last dive — always. Pick up any gifts from the shops in town; local hot sauce and Bonairean honey are worth bringing home. Lunch at a harbour café, something simple with a good view. Head to Flamingo Airport. Bonaire does that thing where it's hard to leave. Most people who come once come back.
